Inspired by the regal fans once used by Ghanaian queens, these striking pieces unite West African heritage with modern design. Use them solo as a statement piece on your wall or tabletop, or pair them up for extra effect.

Responsibly sourced and thoughtfully crafted with natural elephant grass by Fair Trade artisans in Ghana. Each fan is masterfully hand-woven by women across Ghana’s Bolgatanga region using time-honored techniques and motifs passed down through generations. Made from native elephant grass, the complex process takes 12 hours and requires years of training.

Artisan Story

HANDWOVEN IN GHANA

"Our weaving is still very traditional and passed down from generation to generation, but we are always working on ways to modernize and progress."

Head 13 hours due north from Ghana’s capital city, Accra, through the lush West African landscape and you’ll reach the famed town of Bolgatanga (or Bolga as it’s more commonly called). For centuries traders crossed Africa’s dangerous trade routes to carry Bolga’s treasures far and wide - even to the royal courts of Europe and Asia. Today, Bolga’s crafts are still exported around the globe and, with a population of only 66,000, the town’s influence is definitely supersized.

But Bolga is only the central hub of the wider Upper East Region that spans half of Ghana’s northern border. Here we work with Godwin who coordinates his vast team of 4000 weavers spread across the region. Every day women meet in communal groups or work from their homes in a tradition largely unchanged for centuries. They use the same techniques passed down from their mothers and master weavers and continue to harvest the same native elephant grass.

For many women this work offers the flexibility to earn a dignified living wage while also caring for their children and family. For others, weaving has been a stepping stone to invest in higher education and launch them into professional careers.
