Named after its maker expert weaver Vestine, these beautiful bowls were inspired by fabric Vestine found (pictured). It is a challenge for most weavers to take an established pattern and weave it with perfect balance and excellence in every stitch, but Vestine has a gift. In this exquisite bowl, she shares her gift with all of us.

The Vestine Green Woven Bowls can be mixed with other designs or stand alone to make a unique statement perfect for any room. The limited edition designs in the Boutique Collection are crafted in small batches and will not be remade.

Imagine the medium bowl on your dining room table filled with warm bread or fruit. The small bowl is a beautiful way to hold jewelry or keys, or it may be filled with small treats and used as a gift basket. Each woven bowl has a loop on the back for hanging—they look gorgeous on a blank wall!

Meticulously crafted from natural sisal fibers threaded over a core of locally-gathered forest grasses. The weavers begin in the middle of the basket, carefully threading the sisal around and around to create this beautiful design. The tea color is created when the naturally-white sisal fibers are steeped in Rwandan-grown tea leaves!

Artisan Story

Abibumbye Cooperative
People Encircled Together Cooperative

The women of the Abibumbye Cooperative do not consider themselves merely co-workers, or even friends. They consider themselves a family that helps each other grow and flourish, working together to overcome poverty. One of their few requirements for joining the group is a willingness to teach and share their skills with other cooperative members. The women pride themselves on the diversity of their talents and their ability to come together as one group to perfect their crafts. The cooperative has been working together in Muhanga District since 2008 and has over 20 members. The women of Abibumbye Cooperative primarily craft coin purses, ornamental balls, woven bowls and the Caramel Twist Pot, though the members of the group are also skilled in beading and crochet.

This “family” has many aspirations, mainly to become a larger cooperative with their own workshop and marketplace. With a larger cooperative, they would have more resources to create associations with more diverse purposes, like cultivating and farming.

We hope to gain income that will help us to maintain better lives and say goodbye to poverty forever.
