Bring warm, neutral tones into your home with these stunning palm hampers featuring a chestnut arrow design. Each basket features a fitted lid perfect for hiding what's inside!

These beautiful handcrafted laundry hampers showcase the talent of rural Turkana basket weavers in dry northern Kenya. The Turkana weavers transform the fronds of doum palm, also known as the gingerbread tree, into gorgeous, 100% natural-fiber storage baskets.

The wide, flat palm fronds are woven in a traditional coil method, giving this lidded hamper a smooth finish, pleasing to the touch. These durable storage baskets are crafted to serve beautifully in any room of the home for years.

Because these are handcrafted baskets, each may vary slightly. Arrow designs in chestnut brown are assorted.

Artisan Story

The Turkana tribe lives in the remote, semi-arid Turkana District in northwest Kenya. Their environment is frequently affected by drought, leading the Turkana people to habitually relocate to seek rain and fresh vegetation. They are pastoralists, relying on cattle for many of their needs. The tribe often travels in small groups to find pasture to sustain their livestock.

Turkana basket weavers are women of the tribe, weaving in the traditional coil method that has been passed down through generations. They weave with gingerbread palm fronds, also called doum palm—a drought-resistant native plant in northern Africa, which also produces edible date fruits.

Brand Story

Swahili exists to create positive exchanges between African artisans and people around the world. Swahili is dedicated to African artisans; their skill, determination and sharing spirit.

Artisan Advancement
We believe that hardworking African makers, producers and export agents should be the architects of their own personal success. Swahili serves to extend a maker's channel of trade from local tourist markets to the global retail gift marketplace. Artisans who craft products for export work from the comfort of their own homes and communities, so the payment received is not be reduced by traveling expenses, childcare costs and haggled prices.

Fair Trade
Swahili is a member of the Fair Trade Federation, a group of like-minded companies and organizations that adhere to:
-providing fair payment to workers in developing nations
-educating makers and workers to increase their potential for advancement
-ensuring the rights of children
-developing products and processes that protect and conserve the natural environment
-promoting fair trade as the standard in commercial exchanges

Conserve
Swahili works with producers across Africa who value their natural environment and employ sustainable methods of production. Makers utilize materials fully by converting scraps into salable products. Our partners excel at incorporating recycled, reclaimed and highly renewable materials in product design, and at isolating new sources of low-cost materials.
