These artisan handwoven catch-all African baskets are designed with durability and beauty in mind, blending function, traditional craft, and modern style for a truly unique storage solution. Traditionally, such baskets were used to winnow grain and store food and other articles in the home.

Responsibly sourced and thoughtfully crafted with cattail stalks and recycled salvage plastic by Fair Trade artisans in Senegal. Wolof women in the West African nation of Senegal hand-weave these baskets in the traditional coil weaving method using natural grass. Interweaving colorful strips of plastic, salvaged from a mat factory in Dakar, the weavers create beautiful designs that are truly a work of art.

"Wolof women take pride in their craftsmanship and ability to help provide for their families using this traditional skill."

Home Care:  To lightly clean a Senegal basket, simply wipe with a damp cloth to clean the plastic. To reshape a Senegal basket, apply gentle pressure to achieve the desired shape. For example, a large hamper may start to lean slightly over time; you can reshape it by laying the basket on its side, removing the lid, and gently pressing with both hands. We do not recommend wetting or saturating your Senegalese basket. The thick coils of grass are likely to mold before they fully dry.
