Handwoven in the West African nation of Senegal, this lidded basket brings incredible artisan craftsmanship and great storage into our living spaces. Crafting baskets allows rural women to earn income from the comfort of their community.

Originally created with an association of more than 100 rural Wolof women and the Peace Corps in an effort to improve quality of life in Senegal, the baskets are tightly woven and will last for years to come with little to no maintenance.

Because this is a handcrafted item, each may vary slightly.

Features
  • Available individually in 3 sizes
  • Measurements (approximately): 17"L x 17"W x 22"H
  • Crafted from: Cattail stalks, recycled salvaged plastic
  • Ethically made in: Senegal

Home Care:
To lightly clean a Senegal basket, simply wipe with a damp cloth to clean the plastic.

To reshape a Senegal basket, apply gentle pressure to achieve the desired shape. For example, a large hamper may start to lean slightly over time; you can reshape it by laying the basket on its side, removing the lid, and gently pressing with both hands.

We do not recommend wetting or saturating your Senegalese basket. The thick coils of grass are likely to mold before they fully dry.

Artisan Story

WOLOF Weavers of Rural Senegal
Senegal, West Africa

This coil style of basket weaving has been practiced in Senegal for generations. Traditionally, Wolof women created baskets by binding stalks of cattail grass, a thick local grass, with long strips of reed. Though reed strips could be harvested locally, they were very hard on the hands of the weavers. About 20 years ago, an idea revolutionized Wolof basket weaving.

A factory in Dakar, the capital of Senegal, creates mats using salvaged plastic strips that strongly resemble the reed strips. Using the plastic strips to replace the sharp natural material, conditions for the weavers drastically improved and the baskets began to burst into vibrant colors.

Since 2008, Swahili has worked with a group of talented Wolof weavers in remote Senegal to design hampers and baskets woven from the salvaged plastic strips and cattail stalks. First introduced by the Peace Corps, Swahili and more than 120 Wolof women prove that cooperative, home-based craft export is an excellent way for rural women to earn fair trade incomes that build healthy communities.

Brand Story

Swahili exists to create positive exchanges between African artisans and people around the world. Swahili is dedicated to African artisans; their skill, determination and sharing spirit.

Artisan Advancement
We believe that hardworking African makers, producers and export agents should be the architects of their own personal success. Swahili serves to extend a maker's channel of trade from local tourist markets to the global retail gift marketplace. Artisans who craft products for export work from the comfort of their own homes and communities, so the payment received is not be reduced by traveling expenses, childcare costs and haggled prices.

Fair Trade
Swahili is a member of the Fair Trade Federation, a group of like-minded companies and organizations that adhere to:
-providing fair payment to workers in developing nations
-educating makers and workers to increase their potential for advancement
-ensuring the rights of children
-developing products and processes that protect and conserve the natural environment
-promoting fair trade as the standard in commercial exchanges

Conserve
Swahili works with producers across Africa who value their natural environment and employ sustainable methods of production. Makers utilize materials fully by converting scraps into salable products. Our partners excel at incorporating recycled, reclaimed and highly renewable materials in product design, and at isolating new sources of low-cost materials.
