Palm leaves, wild twigs and creeping vines make this distinctive Tonga basket a truly unique home accent. Each basket takes days to make and uses palm leaves carefully boiled in natural dye and dried in the sun. These are traditionally used as fruit baskets but also look great in our favorite wall basket displays.
Responsibly sourced and thoughtfully crafted with natural sun-dried palm leaves by Fair Trade artisans in Zambia.
Artisan Story
HANDWOVEN IN ZAMBIA
"We know a lot about baskets. Its our heritage and our tradition."
Across the Southern Province of Zambia, Tonga women gather in small groups every day to weave baskets. It is believed that their unique weaving skills are inherited from the Ancestors who crafted baskets for gathering and serving food.
Today, these baskets are still widely used in rural Zambian homes and skills are passed from mother to daughter. Made from abundant natural materials like palm leaves and wild twigs, their baskets have a distinctive design with a flat square base.
We first visited these master craftswomen during Zambia’s hottest season when temperatures soar past 100 degrees. We joined them under the shade of a thatched grass roof and watched as they transform dried leaves and twigs into living art. Between the songs and stories, they joke about their work and how each basket has its own personality and no two ever turn out exactly the same.
